Church built with PJSC Gazprom support opens in Svobodny in Amur region, gets consecrated

Opening and consecration of the temple built in honor of the Holy Martyr Alexei Nikolaevich, Tsarevich of Russia, the son of the last Russian emperor, took place on February 25 in Svobodny, Amur region.


The temple was built with the financial support of Gazprom Group companies and the participation of the Foundation for the Restoration of Historical and Cultural Objects in St. Petersburg. Consecration of the church was performed by Archbishop Lukian of Blagoveshchensk and Tynda.
The ceremony was attended by Vladimir Konstantinov, Mayor of Svobodny, Yuri Lebedev, General Director of Gazprom Pererabotka Blagoveshchensk LLC, representatives of the town and regional administrations, as well as residents of the town.
The temple is built based on the traditions of the Northern architecture of pre-Petr I Russia and is a one-story building with a height of 33.8 meters made of brick, with two domes made of copper covered with 24-carat gold leaf. The church has 12 bells with a total weight of 4.2 tons, as well as a belfry complex of thirteen bells with ancient Russian profiles.
The church is designed for simultaneous presence of up to 500 parishioners. It also has classrooms for the younger and middle age groups of Sunday school students and a music class for the church choir. Territory of the temple complex has also been improved.
«Gazprom's activities are aimed not only at the economic development of the region, but also at improving the social conditions of people's lives, conserving and developing spiritual and cultural values,» Mr Lebedev stressed.

The town of Svobodny in Amur region is located 146 km from Blagoveshchensk and was founded during the construction of Amur railway on the birthday of Alexei Nikolaevich, Tsarevich of Russia, back in 1912. The town turns 110 years old in 2022. It carried the name of Alekseevsk until June 1917.
